Day 12: Great Synagogue, Jewish Museum, & Jewish Ghetto

Finally we have gotten back to a slower pace. There is so much to see in Rome that we got a little tour crazy. We had a late breakfast at our hotel this morning.

We took a taxi to the great synagogue in Rome.

It is really quite impressive.

This is the dome.

We then went to the Jewish Museum of Rome which is in the basement of the synagogue.

There were tons of beautiful embroidered torah and ark covers.

Inside of the museum they reconstructed the Spanish or Sephardic Synagogue that was going to be destroyed.  So glad we got to see this.

We were in luck since there was a wonderful art exhibit in the museum.

"Roma 1948-Italian Art Toward Israel" commemorates what happen soon after the establishment of Israel in 1948. In June 1948 a group of Roman Jewish Artist created a show in the Galleria d'Arte Antica Palazzo Torlonia to show solidarity with the new state of Israel. All of the paintings were later moved to the Art Museum in Tel Aviv in 1949. A few made it back to Rome for this show.  Here are a couple of examples.

Angela by Franco Gentilini, 1946

Landscape by Pietro Cascella, 1947

After we left the museum, we walked around the old Jewish ghetto. These were the first sights.

We then walked down the Main Street with tons of restaurants.  We ate at a Kosher one call Ba'Ghetto.  We had heard great things about the Jewish artichokes. We tried one Jewish and one Roman.  They were both tasty.

As we walked back toward our hotel and Trevi Fountain we passed the Pantheon.  We also passed a number of landmarks from the Dan Brown book and movie--Angels and Demons.  Need to watch it again now.

Last on our walk today was the Trevi fountain.  It was a Sunday and packed, but I managed to get a few shots with no people.

Here's an internet photo that shows the whole fountain.

Walking back to the hotel we passed a narrow street with a great view of the Spanish Steps.

Finally back across the Tiber River to our hotel.
