For the past two days we have walked and wandered around Rome. On Monday there were not many people out and about, so this was a real treat. I had mentioned that the Italian Supreme Court was in our neighborhood, we walk by it a lot to get to the hotel.
We cross the Tiber to get to the main part of Rome. We can see the very top of St. Peter's from our hotel room, but a much better view from the bridge.
We walked to Piazza Navona, which was lovely with tons of restaurants around the piazza. There are 3 fountains that run the length of Navona. Bernini made the Fountain of the Four Rivers.
The other two were made by Giacomo della Porta, an apprentice of Michelangelo.
We spent a lot of time in this piazza and decided to come back later for dinner. We walked on to Campo dei Fiori. This was an open air marketplace with food stores and restaurants around the edges. Lots to look at.
Of course there are churches everywhere. If the doors are open we go in and take a rest while admiring the art and treasures. This is the Basilica of Saint Andrea della Valle.
Walking back toward Piazza Navona for dinner, we walked by this huge excavation right in the middle of the city. No idea what it is.
Back at Piazza Navona we had a lovely dinner at Bernini Ristorante. Couldn't resist the name. It was great food.
In a square next to the steps was a monuments with four biblical figures--David, Isaiah, Ezekiel, & Moses. Not sure which one this is, but loved that he was writing.
And walking back to the hotel, of course we came across another open church--Basilica dei Ambrogio e Carlo.
Tomorrow we take a bus to Siena. Arrivederci Roma!
