I am pretty obsessed with our hotel in Siena. The building was built around 1250. It went through a number of different purposes and about 200 years ago it was bought by an antiques dealer who remodeled it, adding tons of adornments. There are three of theses faces in a row in the hallway outside our room.
There are she-wolfs all over the city including in front of our elevator. Legend has it that Siena was established by Senius, son of Remus and nephew of Romulus. So, the symbol of Siena is a she-wolf breastfeeding Romulus and Remus.
The views from our room are astounding.
The city is over a thousand years old and is a joy to walk thought.
This is the place where they have the horse races around the main square, Il Campo.
The place is divided up into condrade (neighborhoods)--each with it's own colors and symbols. Even the street lights are in the color of their condrada.
These are the seventeen flags of the condrade.
Il campo has a beautiful fountain with many she-wolves.
The Duomo (main cathedral) is spectacular built of marble in Siena's colors--black and white.
The front facade is super ornate with all kinds of animals carved into it.
Including guess who.
The entire cathedral has marble inlaid floors.
There was a library with beautiful frescos and illuminated song books--stunning.
We went to a museum and crypt that had tons of statues and frescos that had been hidden and now have colors similar to those when it was produced over a thousand years ago.
It's so enjoyable walking the town and checking out stores like this truffle shop and fruit stand.
Another good day.
