Day 23: Pisa and Lucca

Today we took a bus from Florence west to Pisa and Lucca.  Along the way there was a town named Pistoia that grows trees and has tons of nurseries. We literally drove for miles and miles seeing scenes like this on both sides of the bus. It was like a company town, but for growing trees.

Our first stop was Pisa. I had never thought much about the leaning tower, but it was actually very beautiful as was the church and baptistery in the same park. Everything in marble.

All of these churches have weird creatures adorning them.

Then on to the Tuscan town of Lucca.  It's different than the other towns we've visited since it isn't a hill town.  Like the hill towns, it does have a wall surrounding the city.

On the top of the wall there is a park that runs the length of the entire wall.  Very beautiful and a good use of the wall.

The Duomo in Lucca has the same black and white marble exterior that we've seen throughout Tuscany. They are all medieval--some guides have said it is an Arabian influence.  Not sure, but they are stunning.

Lucca was an especially nice town because there weren't that many tourists there.  Also it was flat, which was a pleasant surprise to our sore feet. It's got the typical narrow streets, quaint shops, and outdoor eateries.

We got take-out food for dinner and ate on our balcony overlooking the Arno River.
