We splurged and took a car from Sorrento to Rome. Very nice having door to door service. After we got our bags unpacked we took a mile and a half walk to the Borghese Gallery. We walked quickly past the Piazza del Polpolo. We'll need to come back when we have more time.
This dude was on the outside of the piazza. Wonder what's so important in the book.
The Borghese family definitely had a ton of money and power. The guy who was responsible for most of the art was Scipione Borghese. He was an Italian Cardinal and a patron of Caravaggio and Bernini. The number of Bernini sculptures there was pretty amazing. Some horrible themes like the Rape of Proserpi, but amazing work.
The details were astounding--especially in marble.
His statue of David.
Don't know the artist on this guy, but loved it.
There were really detailed carvings on many sarcophagus.
Every inch of the walls, ceilings, and floors were covered with art.
We learned a lot about Caravaggio. He always painted real people. This boy was his lover.
This guy was a poor man who lived on the street. There was a scandal when he painted the man as St. Jerome.
A great 1st day in Rome, but we are exhausted.
